Self Portrait on Hercules II - Flight into Kandahar
Acrylic and gold leaf on canvas, 30" x 30 ", 2008-09
The flight aboard a Hercules into Kandahar was grueling. Wearing a 30lb flak jacket, helmet and visors, I began the turbulent descent into the air base to begin my mission as an appointed military artist. Although the subjects of my acrylic paintings are often behind-the-scenes workers and under-recognized people, In my practice I include self-portraiture for the artist too is a worker. These self referential works serve to confirm my existence, and in “Flight Into Kandahar”, I tell my story of entering a war zone.
